It's the year 3000 A.D.; the Earth is lost to the alien race of Psychlos. Humanity is enslaved by these gold-thirsty tyrants, whom are unaware that their 'man-animals' are about to ignite the rebellion of a lifetime.
There is one thing that Travolta got right and that is the darkness. This may be great for Psychlos, but for humans it makes for difficulties suchfollowing the plot. That's OK, because the plot was disconnected anyway.<br/><br/>I'm an admirer of Hubbard's work and found Battlefield Earth a wonderful book. When a book is adapted to the movie screen, I let the movie speak for itself instead of making expectations of my reading. In this way the movie is more enjoyable. However, the screenwriters should have gone back and read and re-read the book. Maybe they would have gotten a clue about constructing a plot.<br/><br/>Robert the Fox is a main character in the book, but you wouldn't know it by the movie. The two met in Scotland after Jonny escaped from Terl. You'd never know it by the movie. There are a couple of major Psychlo and human players missing, which accounts for the holes in the plot.<br/><br/>Don't waste your money seeing this loser. Go rent Attack of the Killer Tomatoes instead.
If you watch this moviea comedy instead of an an action movie this is one of the funniest movies of all time. With classic quotes from John Travolta suchthe constant use of the word "man animals", and (in reference to the gold) "You smelted it into bar form". Then there is the high quality acting from the "man-animals", the grunting and monkey like movements make for some quality comedic acting. The setting only helps the comedy, I laugh whenever I remind myself that the year is 3000 and yet our weapons from 1000 years earlier are in tact and ready to use. Then not only are our out dated weapons ready to use but they can apparently do now what they failed to do 1000 years earlier which is destroy the alien planet. What a great idea; in my opinion this passes "There's Something about Mary"the funniest movie sequence of all time. On one last note, the hardest laughs came from the costumes…poor John Travolta, they spent all that money on making him tall and creating a back lot environment but they couldn't find a way to hide his fat gut?

Originally intended to be a two-part move, Battlefield Earth depicts the first half of the novel. A sequel was intended to be made shortly after, but these plans never occurred. No. While the author of the novel Battlefield Earth, L. Ron Hubbard, is also the founder of the Church of Scientology, little or no Scientologist views are presented in the book. John Travolta was intent on making this filmboth a follower of L.Ron Hubbard anda fan of the source material. However, the film focuses on the science fiction aspects of the original novel, and does not intentionally promote any religious agenda. Slight similarities between themes of the novel and film and teachings of Scientology do exist, but the connection is more incidental than anything else. Several things. The book was long and verbose, and was difficult to condense into a two-hour movie; in fact, only the first half was filmed, with the second intended to be the sequel. The pulp science-fiction plot was considered to be clunky and outdated, and despite John Travolta's enthusiasm for the film, many studios were unwilling to finance the movie.<br/><br/>Upon release, the film received a critical drubbing, with common criticisms suchthe poor acting, an outrageous and inconsistent plot, and a baffling visual style employed by the director (which included an excessive use of slow-motion and Dutch angles). This led to poor word of mouth before and after the release. In addition, the often poorly portrayed image of Scientology instantly tainted public perception, and the motives behind making this movie based on a novel by Scientology's founder <a href="/name/nm0399196/">L. Ron Hubbard</a> seemed to overwhelm viewer objectivity.<br/><br/>Lastly, production company Franchise Pictures was sued in 2004 by its German investors when it was discovered that it had been inflating film budgets, including that of Battlefield Earth.
